Source 2.1

Source 2.1 is a personal memoir published mover than ten years after the wear by a front line solider.

The source explains the everyday life solider have to face. It describles the environment soliders are face. ¡°Enomous noise. Continuous explosion. A deserted landcape. Complete immobility of everything.¡± This suggest the level of combat between the two sides with massive explosion, and also gives the excate detail of no mans¡¯ land.

¡®then suddenly there was a terrific crash whick flung me yards.¡± This refers back to the big explosions made by te bombs which can happen anytime during the day or night.

In figure 7.33 is a picture of three young german boys after the war. These boys look no older than fourteen or fifteen.

As you look at the background you can see a field of green grass, no more death or blood.

As the new generation of nature has grown so has the soldiers.

This source has a very strong emotional impact, it shows the country what kind war soldiers have to face and also the experiences soldiers go through even at the age for 14 or 15.

The aim of this source is to express the feelings of war through these young soldiers. To show the nations war is a living hell. And the memories can not be forgotten, as you look at the expressions of these young soldiers they have been shocked and bombed with fear.

These three young soldiers might be hurt on the outside and can be healed through time, but the damage war bought upon them on the inside can never be forgotten.

world war I declearled on 4th august 1914, after weeks of tension, hesitation and uncertainty.

war was welcomed on all sides as an opportunity for glory, patriotism and adventure. mens from all ages rushed to be in the show, in the firm belieft that war would be over by chirstmas.

In source 7.1 shows how enthusiasm war was to britain, mens walking in hundreds towards war.

british governments was using posters to recruit more soldiers. in sourice 3.10 shows how effective british government posters was.

Every nation belived war would end before chirstmas, but unfortunally as war dragged alone soldiers started to realise war wasnt all glory and wonderful as they throught it would be.

As Both sides started to dig and trenches developed war became hell. "we imagine battles, artillery and the rattle of machine-gun fire, but one of the most lasting memories many veterans of the trenches have is the smell" soldiers spent up for weeks in trenches without changing once, this was a problem, but it was heaven for lices, these small insects made ther homes in the seams of clothings and their eggs were hatched by body heat. in source 7.16 is a picture of the german soldiers having a bath to get ride of the lice and any other dirty diseases.

it was not uncommon for the men in the trecnhes to have to stand for days at a stretch in kenn-deep water. The lack of drainage and the often incessant rain meant that the trecnhes were frequently full of water. This led to the condition of trench foot.

in source 5.4 shows a severe case of trench foot.

trench foot is caused by constand immersion in water. which swells up and sometimes toes could rot off.

Trench foot wasnt the only thing that was killing soldiers. gas was one of the scientific deveopments of war designed to break the deadlock. most soldiers who has been on the field long enough will know when to put on the mask when a gas attack comes. its mainly the new soldiers who has just arrvied who are the victims. In source 7.21 is a photograph of a victim of a mustard gas attack.

all these changed the attiude to war, soldiers were experiencing the living hell.

war was death. from source 2.36 you can see the the horror of war soldiers live through. no one expected the war to develop as it did, and as the war dragged on year after year, changes in attitude developed. men at the front came to see sacrifice as futile, the war as senseless slaughter.

source 3.10

Is a early british government recruitment poster.

the poster was made for the british people encouring them to fight for their country. The aim of this poster is achieved by the big photo in the middle. its a unnamed man, because hes face is so famours everybody knows who he is. he was lord kitchener, war hero, and war minister in 1914. The poster could also be telling the mens out their that this could be you after the war, famours and respectful.

This poster has a very emtional impact on the soldiers out their, the way hes looking at you as if you could be the hero of the day making everyone proud, also the way the text are designed is very useful too. BRITONS in captal letters and so is YOU, giving the soldiers a feeling that they are somthing.

this poster contains very little details but has alot of power behind it.

it also refers to your country, suggesting by fighting in the war you will be fighting for your country and people. the poster is reliable because it dosent contain many words and everyone could read and understand. it has little words but a powerful picture.
